We are like waves

I recently attended the funeral service for a friend who passed away. Below are some thoughts I had while contemplating where we all fit in the grand scheme of things.

We are like waves crashing on the shore. Millions of waves begin at sea and inevitably make their way to the shore where they end.

Do the waves go “somewhere else” after washing ashore? No, the water just ends back into the totality of water of the ocean. Did the individual waves even exist, or were they just temporarily-identifiable perturbations of the water in the ocean?

The way we compete and worry about life would be like waves thinking “I’m going to be the biggest wave”, “the fastest wave”, “the tallest wave”, etc. In the end all waves wash ashore and after a while nobody remembers the vast majority of waves.

Millions of waves crash on the shore daily around the world. Nothing comes of it. The world and the ocean continue their daily routine. Even for the largest tidal waves, the ocean does not stop, it continues unfazed.

And even more so for the millions of waves that wash ashore daily. The ocean continues. Life continues. The water returns to the ocean, and the shore gets ready for the next wave.

P.S. Of course, we have self awareness and sentience, and can feel. So, we are different than waves in that we experience our existence; however the way we fit into the grand scheme of things is similar. This seems to point to the conclusion that the best thing we can do with our life is have as much fun & enjoyment as possible.
